HEAVY rainfall has left several areas, especially in the North, flooded, marking the start of a particularly rainy period, with more showers expected across the country this week.

Rundu, in the Kavango East Region, is among the areas that recently experienced heavy showers, leaving some parts of the town – from roads to homes – flooded. While the north-eastern town has already seen substantial rainfall, more is on the way. The Namibia Meteorological Service has predicted thundershowers in Rundu on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Rundu, however, is not the only northern area to have experienced heavy rainfall recently, nor is it the only place expected to see consistent rain this week.

Ondangwa also recorded significant rainfall recently, reportedly receiving at least 100 mm over two days. Photos shared online by Facebook user Sakaria Kandenge show the impact of the recent rainfall, which has filled floodplains in the area. The Namibia Meteorological Service similarly forecasts further rain for Ondangwa, with thunderstorms expected on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Several other northern areas across multiple regions have also recorded consistent showers, including Ongwediva and Oshakati in the Oshana Region, as well as Outjo in the Kunene Region.

Light to very heavy showers have been falling intermittently across the northern regions for almost 48 hours, particularly in Ohangwena, Oshikoto, Oshana and Omusati, where rain has been ongoing since Friday. There is rainwater everywhere, with many houses in informal settlements at Oshakati, Ongwediva, Ondangwa and other urban and peri-urban areas now flooded. Residents wade through water where they once walked on dry land, while the incessant sounds of hammering echo through shanty areas as the heavy downpours expose leaks in iron sheet roofs.

While the heaviest showers fell in the North, the rest of the country has also experienced rainfall. Usakos and Uis in the Erongo Region, Otavi and Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region, and Windhoek in the Khomas Region are among the areas that have recorded rain of varying intensities.

These widespread showers mark the beginning of a potentially rainy period, with an increased risk of flooding. Several places are expected to see consistent showers this week. The Namibia Meteorological Service has highlighted Windhoek and Keetmanshoop as two of the areas likely to receive rainfall on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.

Moderate to heavy rainfall is expected over many parts of the country’s interior tomorrow, with a strong likelihood of flash floods in several areas. The public is advised to remain cautious.
