WHILE some northern areas are already grappling with flooding, the Namibia Meteorological Service has warned that more heavy showers are expected on Friday, raising the risk of more flash floods in the country.

According to the Namibia Meteorological Service, Friday’s heaviest rainfall is expected in the northern and central parts of Namibia. These thunderstorms are expected to be particularly intense in the north-eastern and central-eastern regions.

Several places in the northern and central parts of the country have already witnessed consistent showers, which have intensified as the week has progressed.

Tsumeb, in the Oshikoto Region, is among the areas that experienced extremely heavy showers this week, leaving some of the town’s streets flooded and inaccessible to road users. Oshakati and Ondangwa are also among the northern towns continuing to experience persistent heavy showers, resulting in the flooding of houses in some areas.

In the central parts of the country, Windhoek, in the Khomas Region, has also seen consistent rainfall this week. What began as light showers earlier in the week intensified by mid-week. By Wednesday night, heavy showers hit Windhoek, with some parts of the capital recording around 35 mm of rain, while others saw nearly 50 mm.

This week’s rainfall has been generous across various regions of the country, including Omaruru in the Erongo Region, Leonardville in the Omaheke Region, Otjiwarongo in the Otjozondjupa Region, and Houmoed in the Hardap Region, among others.

However, the widespread showers are not expected to end yet. The Namibia Meteorological Service predicted more heavy rainfall on Friday. The public is advised to prepare accordingly and remain cautious, as flash flooding remains a likely risk. This warning is particularly important for northern residents, where flooding has already begun and where Friday’s showers are expected to be most intense.
