SHIKONGO Paulus, the driver of a white Mazda Demio (N44737SH) who abandoned his female passenger in the car before it was struck by a train at Ondangwa on Christmas Eve, is still at large. The passenger was taken to hospital and treated for mild injuries.

According to the police, the accident occurred at the Omashaka railway crossing on Wednesday when the Mazda was struck while crossing the railway line. The train was travelling from Ondangwa to the Shikongo shaKalulu railway station towards Omashaka when the train operator observed a car approaching the crossing and hooted repeatedly to warn the driver — to no avail.

However, after realising the danger, the driver jumped out and fled, leaving the car on the railway tracks with a passenger seated inside.

The train struck the Mazda on the left side, causing damage to the vehicle and injuring the 57-year-old passenger, Vistoria Indongo.

The driver’s whereabouts are currently unknown.
