THE Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) has issued a statement clarifying the payments of election officials who were employed and deployed during last year’s regional councils and local authorities elections.

This followed after some of the 18,000 election officials who were contracted last year stepped forward, claiming that they were underpaid.

According to the ECN, the employment contracts of the presiding officers and polling officials were valid from 23 to 29 November 2025, and the terms clearly said that the officials only qualified for the fixed rates for the actual duties performed, that is, from the date the individual was deployed to the date he or she was demobilised.

The payment rates for training were N$250 for both presiding officers and polling officials, while fixed daily rates were N$563 for a presiding officer and N$476 for a polling officer.

The fixed daily rates for polling/counting day were N$824 and N$710 for a presiding officer and polling official, respectively.

“To ensure timely payments, the Commission began processing the attendance registers for election officials on 01 December 2025. All submitted attendance registers were verified and processed accordingly. Following the verification process, payments were made based on the actual work done, with the first payments made during the week of 08 December 2025, and the final payments processed during the week of 22 December 2025,” said the ECN, adding that the contract made provision for payments to be made within 60 days from completion of work and receipt of attendance registers.

The ECN further added that it had received sufficient funding for the 2025 Regional Council and Local Authorities elections.
