THE Namibian government has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment in general, including for travellers and visitors.

Sikongo Haihambo, executive director within the Ministry of Environment and Tourism, said that this reaffirmation is in response to recent travel advisories issued by the governments of Canada and the Federal Republic of Germany, as reported by the international media platform Travel and Tour World, which painted Namibia as having high fraud and crime risks.

“While it is acknowledged that every country has some form of risk, Namibia is and remains one of the most peaceful and politically stable countries in the world, characterised by good governance, functional institutions and a high respect for the rule of law. These factors ensure a functional governance system that safeguards and protects residents and visitors,” Haihambo said.

He added that rigorous law enforcement and judicial mechanisms are in place to ensure that perpetrators of criminal activities are brought to book.

“Given the centrality of our tourism sector and the importance that we attach to our visitors (tourists), the government has, over the years, established a dedicated Tourist Protection Unit, with law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders working closely together to ensure a safe and secure environment, with particular focus on tourism areas, urban centres and popular travel routes,” the executive director said.

He added that the abovementioned efforts demonstrate Namibia’s commitment to the safety and security of its visitors.

“Namibia is a welcoming destination, renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, diverse wildlife, rich cultural heritage and warm hospitality. The country continues to offer visitors memorable and rewarding travel experiences. The safety of our visitors is a priority to us, but it is also a shared responsibility with our visitors,” Haihambo stressed.

He concluded by appealing to Namibia’s visitors to support and reinforce the country’s safety measures by taking general safety precautions and adhering to information and regulations shared by official sources. “Namibia remains open and welcoming to tourists and visitors,” Haihambo said.
