Namibia Barcode Center, a Non–Profit Organisation incorporated under section 21.
The company is governed by the Board of Directors, which is comprised of the Retail
Charter sector stakeholders.
In 2018 the Namibia Trade Forum through the implementation of the Retail Sector
Charter commissioned a feasibility study on setting up a GS1 Barcode Center in
Namibia.
A barcode was identified as one of minimum barriers to entry of Namibian
manufactured products in local retail outlets.
For many years Namibia lacked the institutional framework to issue barcodes. Thus
the formation of the Barcode Centre is the first among other requirements that would
allow the country to issue barcodes without reliance on other countries such as South
Africa.
