THE first week of December brought showers to many parts of the country, which grew heavier over the weekend and are expected to intensify further this coming week, raising the possibility of flash floods.

Tsintsabis in the Oshikoto Region was among the places that saw significant rainfall, recording nearly 140 millimetres (mm) between Friday and Saturday. Other northern areas, such as Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, also experienced notable showers, as did Eunda in the Omusati Region, which reportedly recorded more than 60 mm of rain over the weekend.

However, the rain was not confined to the northern parts of the country. Windhoek in the Khomas Region also saw consistent, albeit mostly light, showers this past weekend. Parts of the capital recorded around 7 mm of rainfall, while others received nearly 15 mm.

Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region also recorded heavy rain, which left some of the town’s roads flooded.

Various other places, including Uis in the Erongo Region, as well as Aranos and surrounding areas in the Hardap Region, also reported rainfall.

While the first week of the month brought generous rainfall across multiple regions, the second week of December is expected to start with even more intense weather that could potentially result in flash floods in some parts of the country.

According to the Namibia Meteorological Services, heavier thundershowers are expected on Monday, particularly in the northern parts of the country. The public is advised to remain vigilant and cautious, as flash floods are likely.
