THE Office of the Prime Minister has urged all regions to activate flood contingency measures immediately, as the risk of sustained flooding across the country remains high.

According to the Office of the Prime Minister, above-normal rainfall and the potential for flash floods are expected during the 2025/2026 season. Ambassador Emilia Nkusa, Secretary to the Cabinet, warned that the season could also bring strong winds and lightning, which would pose risks to lives, infrastructure, crops, and property.

Nkusa therefore called for urgent action, including the relocation of communities in flood-prone areas to protect lives, and ensuring that early warning systems are communicated through regional platforms.

This week has already seen widespread thunderstorms, which have affected various parts of the country, causing flooding in several areas.

Gobabis in the Omaheke Region is one of the areas that recently experienced significant heavy showers, particularly on Thursday and Friday, with residents and vehicles being forced to navigate flooded streets.

However, flash floods have not been limited to Gobabis. Several northern areas have also experienced persistent heavy rainfall and flooding this week. Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, in particular, has received consistent heavy showers, resulting in flooding in some parts of the town throughout the week.

The same situation occurred in Okahandja in the Otjozondjupa Region, which also experienced particularly heavy showers on Thursday, resulting in floods in parts of the town. A number of other areas in the Otjozondjupa Region also saw significant rainfall, including Otjiwarongo, Grootfontein, as well as Gross Barmen and surrounding areas.

Some central areas, such as Windhoek, have also experienced consistent rainfall this week, with the intensity increasing as the week progressed. The City of Windhoek has therefore warned the public to remain cautious and vigilant, as the capital is particularly vulnerable to flash floods.
