PARTS of Namibia have recorded fresh rainfall over the past few days, with rivers beginning to flow in some areas, while meteorologists forecast slightly cooler conditions in the south and continued chances of isolated thundershowers in the north-east.
Videos shared on social media over the weekend showed rivers flowing in the Khomas Hochland, with one post adding that “the rain has finally arrived” in the area. Further north, the Otavi Valley recorded 17.5 millimetres of rainfall on 3 January, accompanied by reports of hail in some places.
According to the Namibia Meteorological Service, Omungwelume also recorded 17.5 millimetres of rain, while Okondjatu received 1.8 millimetres and Okaukuejo measured light rainfall of about 0.5 millimetres.

In its forecast, the weather service said cooler air is moving into the southern parts of the country, with similar conditions expected to persist into Monday. Interior regions will be sunny and hot in the south, while elsewhere conditions will be partly cloudy and hot to very hot, with a few to isolated thundershowers expected mainly in the north-eastern regions.
A fresh to strong southerly to westerly wind is expected in the interior, while coastal areas will be partly cloudy and mild, with morning drizzle possible in places. Winds along the coast are forecast to be moderate to fresh, blowing from the south to south-west.
Meteorologists explained that a high-pressure system is pushing cooler air into the south, while tropical moisture continues to circulate over the northern regions, creating conditions favourable for isolated thunderstorms in the north-east.
Temperatures are expected to remain very high in several areas, with maximums of around 37°C in Rundu, 36°C in Katima Mulilo and Gobabis, and 35°C in Okaukuejo. Windhoek is forecast to reach a high of about 33°C, while Karasberg in the south is also expected to reach 33°C.
Along the coast, cooler conditions will prevail, with maximum temperatures of around 19°C at Terrace Bay and 26°C in Lüderitz.
Authorities continue to urge the public to prioritise safety, especially when travelling near rivers or flood-prone roads, particularly in areas prone to flash flooding or sudden changes in river levels.
