THE 46-year-old driver died instantly, and his seven passengers sustained injuries of varying degrees when his minibus collided head-on with a Zambian truck on the Grootfontein–Otavi main road on Friday afternoon.

The accident occurred approximately 13 km outside Grootfontein towards Otavi, and not between Rundu and Grootfontein as reported earlier.

It is alleged that the Zambian driver of a yellow BHL truck (ATB 7824 ZM) was travelling towards Grootfontein from Otavi when he overtook another Zambian truck (AUB 2469 ZM) while it was raining and, in the process, collided head-on with the oncoming Toyota Quantum (N 3572 G), which was travelling from Grootfontein towards Otavi. The other truck also became involved in the accident, hitting the trailer of the first truck before it overturned.

The driver of the Quantum died on the spot, and the seven passengers in the minibus sustained serious to minor injuries.

The drivers of the two trucks and two passengers also sustained head and body injuries.
