A FLOOD warning has been issued as moderate to heavy rainfall continues across several regions of Namibia, prompting the temporary closure of the Swartz River Bridge bypass on the B1 road between Windhoek and Okahandja after it was washed away by floodwaters.

The Roads Authority (RA) confirmed that the temporary bypass near Osona Village was damaged by recent heavy rains and has been closed to all traffic with immediate effect and until further notice in the interest of public safety. Motorists, including residents of Osona Village, have been advised to use the dual carriageway as an alternative route while assessments and remedial measures are underway. The RA said it is working with relevant stakeholders and will provide updates as the situation develops.

The closure comes amid widespread rainfall linked to persistent tropical moisture, with weather authorities warning of possible flash floods in parts of the Kunene, Erongo East, Otjozondjupa and central northern regions. Forecasts indicate that moderate to heavy rainfall is expected to continue in these areas, while a few thundershowers are forecast for parts of the Omaheke Region. Coastal areas are expected to remain partly cloudy and mild to warm.
